Wood engravings are distinguished from wood cuts by their use of what is known as the ‘white-line’ as opposed to the ‘black-line’ technique. They are produced by engraving the drawing directly onto the end-grain of a block made of Boxwood which is then rolled with ink and finally pressed carefully onto paper with the resulting effect that the engraved lines print white.
